School Nurse - Dual Language

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This list is intended to be illustrative rather than complete, and serves to show major duties and responsibilities of a School Nurse at La Academia Antonia Alonso. It does not express or imply that these are the only duties to be performed by the person in this position.

Prefer candidate to speak Spanish and English.
Provides health care and administers prescribed medications for the school
Screening and referral for health conditions
Keeps accurate health records on all students and supervises compliance with immunizations and communicable disease regulations
Promote a healthy and safe school environment
Serve in a leadership role for health policies and programs and as a liaison between school personnel, family, community, and health care providers
Counsels students on medical issues and conducts short and long term planning to address the individual health needs of students
Work collaboratively with other staff
Maintain professional competence through participation in professional development activities
Attend meetings and other activities, as determined by the school leader
Participate in 1-2 week Annual Summer Program for incoming students

Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
Ability to work well with students, staff, parents, and community members

Ability to analyze and interpret data

Enjoys working with adolescents, families and staff

Prior to employment as a school nurse:
Bachelor degree in Nursing
3 years supervised clinical experience
Current CPR and AED certification
RN license to practice in Delaware

After employment as a school nurse a prescribed cluster of study (90 hours) must be completed within the first 18 months of employment. The Induction Cluster includes six modules:
School Nurse Orientation (Module 4)
Issues in School Nursing (Modules 1, 2, & 3)
Preventing Communicable Disease (Module 5)
The Exceptional Child (Module 6)

Additionally, the nurse must pass the CORE Praxis and successfully complete the mentoring program.
